IRS Tax Filing Deadline Is Today

The deadline for filing your taxes without penalty is today.  To be filed on time, you must transmit your electronic return by 11:59 pm.  For those filing by mail, the envelope must be postmarked with the date of April 15th or before.

Dropping the return in the outdoor drop box, even at the post office, may not get the post mark.  You are encouraged to take the return into the post office and hand it to the clerk at the counter, ensuring it receives the correct post mark.

If you are unable to file a completed return today, you are encouraged to file for an extension.  That extension must be filed by the end of the day.

The IRS says it’s important to know that you are only filing for an extension to file your return, not extra time to pay. If you do owe taxes, you still need to pay those by April 15th to avoid penalties and interest.

If you do file for an extension, that will give you until October 15th to file your return without penalties.
