In the United States, there are an estimated 25 million cloud-to-ground lightning flashes each year. While lightning can be fascinating to watch, it is also extremely dangerous. Warning Coordination Meteorologist Andy Bailey says lightning is common when we have thunderstorms.
Bailey says the type of shelter matters with lightning.
As Bailey said, lightning can strike quite a distance from the thunderstorm with which it is associated.
