The Chillicothe Hornets battled new MEC conference foe Excelsior Springs Thursday night in Chillicothe, with the Tigers earning a 4-0 victory.
The match opened evenly, with both teams going back and forth and creating scoring opportunities. Excelsior Springs capitalized on a corner kick midway through the first half to take a 1-0 lead, then added another goal before halftime to take a 2-0 advantage into the break.
Chillicothe came out firing in the second half, narrowly missing on several early opportunities as the Hornets looked to cut into the deficit. However, some favorable bounces went Excelsior Springs’ way, allowing the Tigers to add two more goals and finish with the 4-0 win.
In the JV match, Excelsior Springs earned a 3-0 victory.
The loss moves Chillicothe to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in MEC play. The Hornets return to action Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Maryville in the rescheduled conference match.
