The Chillicothe cross country teams enjoyed a strong morning Saturday at the Laker Invitational in Camdenton, taking advantage of cooler temperatures and a fast course to produce seven medalists, numerous personal records and several season-best times.
The varsity boys finished third in the Class 1-3 division, coming just three points short of second place. Spencer Johansen led the Hornets with a fourth-place finish in 17:36, a personal record. Zeph O’Berry followed in sixth at 17:39, also a PR.
Brody Norris finished 14th in 18:09, while Layton Baker placed 18th in 18:26. Both runners recorded personal records.
The varsity girls finished ninth overall while competing without their No. 4 runner and with their No. 5 runner not yet fully racing as she continues to return from injury. Abby Longo led the girls with an 11th-place finish in 22:11, a personal record. Sophie Hurtgen placed 17th in 23:06, a season best, and Payton McGee was 18th in 23:21, also a season best.
The meet provided the Hornets with another opportunity to take advantage of cooler conditions and a fast course as the postseason approaches.
The JV will compete Tuesday at Excelsior Springs before Chillicothe hosts its Showcase Run-A-Thon and Senior Recognition Night Thursday from 6:45-8 p.m. at the CHS track.
