The Chillicothe Hornets boys soccer team hosted Benton in the Class 2 District 8 tournament on Saturday afternoon.
#4 Benton began with a goal in the first 10 minutes from freshman Carlos Vargas Lopez, then later off a corner kick Jorge Reynoso connected with Melvy Vidas who nodded the ball into the back of the net. The Cardinals scored once more before the half with Angel Aviles.
In the 2nd half the #5 Chillicothe Hornets kept battling, but it was Benton who continued the scoring getting two more goals from Vides both assisted by Sam Reynoso, who also scored to go along with his pair of assists. Inside the final three minutes trailing 6-0 Chillicothe found the breakthrough on a free kick from Bradley Ferguson who sent the ball ahead to Coy Jones. Jones got by a couple Cardinal defenders and slotted the ball home to put the Hornets on the scoreboard.
Benton held on to win 6-1 on will advance to the district semifinal on Tuesday against #1 Excelsior Springs. The Hornets season comes to an end with a 5-14 record.
