Lady Hornet Netters Move to 7-2 After Win at Marshall

On Monday, the CHS Girls tennis team traveled to Marshall in their annual dual that typically results in a tight, close match-up. The night started out very close as the Hornets #1 doubles pair of Lexy Smith and Lydia Bonderer took an early lead on their court but Chillicothe’s #2 doubles of Isabel Nagel & Anya Moore started down as well as their #3 doubles of Jocelynn Albrecht & Halle Gabrielson. After a grueling hour, Nagel & Moore battled back with a narrow win as Smith & Bonderer also sealed their win easily. However, the #3 doubles match didn’t go the Hornets way after a close loss.

In singles, Smith won quickly and dominantly to help the team pull ahead on the night, which then set up Nagel and Moore to win rapidly and strongly as well, moving the team score to 5-1. Bonderer’s singles match started out close, but eventually she turned on her power and accuracy to pull ahead clearly, making it 6-1. On the last two courts of the night, sophomore Albrecht faced a very evenly-matched opponent while freshman Merlot Cooper had to direct substitute for #5 singles as the top JV player typically because #5 starter London Douglas went down with a neck injury in her doubles match earlier. Albrecht battled back and forth in the score for an hour, but locked in the win with sharp shots. The last match of the night saw freshamn Cooper face off against a senior Marshall Owl on their senior night with everyone watching as all other courts had cleared off. Cooper started off down by a few games early on, but she slowly chipped away at the score, taking Coach Chambers’ advice very purposefully about body language and playing deep. After finally tying things up at 6-6 under a loud crowd, Cooper really turned on her tough angled shots and won 8-6, bringing the team score to 8-1. This win was the most resounding win Chillicothe has had over Marshall in girls tennis for the Coach Chambers’ and Pyrtle’s tenure. The team moves to 7-2 on the season. Results were as follows:
