The Chillicothe varsity soccer team turned in a dominant performance Wednesday night, shutting out Saint Paul Lutheran 4-0 behind strong possession and a relentless defensive effort.
From the opening whistle, Chillicothe controlled the pace of play, winning key 50-50 balls and maintaining possession throughout the match. That control quickly translated into scoring opportunities.
The Hornets struck first when Halle Gabrielson delivered a perfectly placed through ball to Sophie Hurtgen. Hurtgen’s initial shot deflected high off the goalkeeper, but she stayed with the play and finished with a header to give Chillicothe a 1-0 lead.
Later in the half, the Hornets capitalized on a set piece. Summer Gatson delivered a corner kick that found Hayden Hansen, who converted to extend the lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.
Chillicothe continued its momentum in the second half. Hansen added her second goal of the night after dribbling through the defense and finishing to make it 3-0. The final goal came off a throw-in from Chloe Corona, who connected with Hurtgen for her second goal, sealing the 4-0 victory.
Defensively, Chillicothe was just as impressive. Goalkeeper Layla McKinnis, along with defenders Halle Gabrielson, Anya Moore, Brynley Beemer, and Amyah McKinnis, anchored a back line that allowed no goals. Dawson Baxter played a key role in front of the defense, helping secure the team’s fifth shutout of the season.
Hansen and Hurtgen each finished with two goals, while Gatson, Corona, and Gabrielson each recorded an assist.
With the win, Chillicothe continues to build momentum, now 6-5-2 on the season. The Lady Hornets will host Savannah on Friday night.
