Grundy County Rural Fire responded to a Combine Fire Friday afternoon. The call came in at about 3:10 pm and the fire crew arrived at the scene on NW 50th Street, a mile west of Route A, to find a lot of smoke, but no flames showing.
Firefighters used water to extinguish the smoldering material outside the machine and determined that the majority of the burning material was inside the threshing system. They were able to remove the material and extinguish the fire with minimal damage to the machine.
They determined the likely cause was a bearing failure.
They were on the scene for nearly an hour and a half.
