A week ago, the Chillicothe Hornets Baseball team was the fifth seed in a five-team district tournament.
Now, thanks to an opening round extra-innings win followed by a solid 7-4 win over top seed Odessa, The Hornets Baseball team will be playing for a district championship.
Chillicothe held on to beat Odessa 7 to 4 in a game moved from Odessa to a turf field in Raytown Tuesday night.
Odessa scored first in the bottom of the first, but Chillicothe answered with four runs in the top of the third. Chillicothe started with a single, two walks to load the bases then a Brock Ward line drive to score one. After a strike out, Gage Leamer singled on a ground ball to score two more. Chillicothe scored one on a passed ball for a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Chillicothe started with two singles and hit by a pitch. After a ground out a double by Tucker Wagers scored three runs to lead 7-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Odessa loaded the bases on three walks, scored on an error, scored on a ground out and back-to-back walks with two outs to cut the Hornets lead to 7-4, but a ground out by Odessa ended the game.
Chillicothe had 12 hits including doubles by Brock Miller and Tucker Wagers. Gage Leamer had the start with Brock Ward coming in the seventh for the save. The two combined to allow four runs off seven hits.
Chillicothe will face Oak Grove game for the district championship, a 9-3 winner of Excelsior Springs.
