Lady Hornets Advance To Tournament Championship After Win Over St. Michael

The Chillicothe Lady Hornets basketball team took on St. Michael the Archangel in the semifinal of the Grain Valley tournament on Wednesday evening. The #2 seed in the tournament, the Lady Hornets, were coming off a 40 point victory in the first round over Winnetonka, but St. Michael proved to be a tougher challenge right away when the #6 seed raced out to a six to nothing lead in the ball game.

 

Chillicothe was resilient battling back to take a brief lead in the first quarter before the Guardians held a two-point advantage entering the second quarter. Chillicothe took control right before halftime with a 10-0 run capped off by a Liz Oliver three-pointer that gave Chillicothe a 26-18 halftime lead.

 

The Lady Hornets gained more confidence after the halftime break, scoring at will in the 3rd quarter with 21 points in the frame. Chillicothe’s lead expanded to 20 going into the 4th and the Lady Hornets cruised to victory 66-39. Lyla Beetsma scored 22 for Chillicothe while Oliver added 18.

 

The Lady Hornets are 15-3 on the season and will play in the Grain Valley tournament championship game on Friday night at 7 PM looking to defend their tournament title against the host team, the Grain Valley Lady Eagles.
