The Chillicothe Hornets baseball team faced Lincoln College Prep in the consolation bracket of the Pony Express Tournament following the Hornets 7-5 defeat against Smithville in the opening round.
A sharp start gave Chillicothe an early 2-0 lead through 1 inning, then each team scored once in the 2nd. Dane Ireland pitched the first two innings for the Hornets, allowing just one run as Chillicothe maintained the 3-1 advantage all the way into the 6th inning before breaking the game wide open. Along with drawing the start on the mound, Ireland also recorded two hits and one run, Howie Donoho scored two runs, on one hit and added an RBI, and Cooper Robinson also scored twice on one hit. Chillicothe totaled five runs in the 6th innings, and Koby Wagers who pitched the final five frames for the Hornets, did not allow a single run.
Chillicothe’s 8-1 victory improves the team to 14-5 overall and the Hornets will play in the 5th place game of the Pony Express Thursday against Savannah.
