Household Recycling in Chillicothe is handled through the Chillicothe Municipal Utilities refuse department, working with Hope Haven Industries, and is entirely voluntary. If you want to participate, you will need to separate the recyclables from the trash and place them in a separate bin, box, or bag. By doing this, residents are able to reduce the amount of trash they dispose of and the number of “Orange Bags” they use.
CMU Operations Manager Casey Johnson says there are restrictions to the recycling program. He says they do NOT accept glass, and the recyclables they accept must not contain food waste. The accepted items are in three categories. Johnson says the first is plastics.
While other plastics are recyclable, they are not accepted by Hope Haven Industries.
Remember to rinse any visible food waste from those containers. The plastic grocery sacks are not accepted, but some retailers do have a bin to place those at the store.
Metals are also acceptable.
And paper products.
Tissues, toilet paper, paper towels, and diapers are NOT acceptable.
The refuse crews from CMU do check the items that are left for recycling. Johnson says some items may be rejected.
If you have questions about the recycling program or what is acceptable, you are asked to check the CMU website or call Casey Johnson at 660-646-1664.
