The persistent rains experienced in the area are causing farmers problems from bald spots to mold to flat out flooding. County Executive Director Raysha Tate of the USDA Farm Service Agency explains farmers who need to replant still have some time for both corn and soybeans but it’s getting down to the wire.
Crop insurance determines those final dates for replanting though there are a couple other choices; some may plant a field of beans behind a failed crop of corn. Others who have ‘prevent plant’ insurance may have to rely on it this year.
Weather plays big factor in preventing planting
Tate states that for FSA purposes, a prevent plant field is considered planted ground and is eligible for their programs, but may not get full payment. Farmers would have to talk to their providers for specific insurance coverage.
