The Chillicothe Lady Hornets hosted Westran on Wednesday night. Both teams entered with strong records, Chillicothe at 17-3 and Westran 15-7.
The road contest proved a major challenge for the Class 2 Lady Hornets of Westran, however early on, they hung with Chillicothe trailing just 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. Chillicothe’s half court defense was phenomenal, nearly erasing the idea of an open look for Westran. Lyla Beetsma rose her game to another level as well. In the first half, the Lady Hornets leading scorer contributed 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Chillicothe’s senior leader was everywhere on the floor as the Lady Hornets opened up a 26-10 lead at halftime.
The Lady Hornets intensity was evident in the 3rd quarter, smothering Westran on the defensive end. Chillicothe held their opposition to 6 points or less in each of the first three quarters, while the offense kept clicking thanks to the big night from Beetsma. Ahead 43-16 with one quarter to play, Westran brought everything they had through the final whistle, closing the final margin at 51-32.
The night belonged to Chillicothe’s Lyla Beetsma who scored 21 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out 6 assists, all of which were game highs in the win. Chillicothe will host Savannah on Friday night in an MEC boys and girls doubleheader.
