Girls Soccer: Kirksville Defeats Chillicothe in District

The Lady Hornets soccer team competed in the opening round of the Class 2 District 8 tournament in Cameron Monday night. #5 Chillicothe was matched up against #4 Kirksville with the winner advancing to Thursday’s semifinal against top seeded Maryville. Kirksville had defeated the Lady Hornets twice in the regular season, and Chillicothe was looking to turn the tables.

Coach Jimmy Chapman’s team played a really strong first half, going toe to toe with the Tigers until the final three minutes of the half when Kirksville found the breakthrough. Katherine Vincent took the ball down the ride sideline and crossed it in where Lauren Albright was waiting at the back post to give Kirksville a 1-0 lead at half.

The Lady Hornets still found themselves trailing by a one goal deficit inside the final 25 minutes when Coach Chapman and his team tried to be more aggressive knowing the needed a goal to equalize. That presented opportunities for the Lady Tigers to attack and Kirksville scored three times in a 10 minute span late in the 2nd half. Lucy Tiedemann had two while Vincent added a goal to go along with her first half assist. The Lady Hornets battled to the final whistle but fell 4-0 to Kirksville in the district tournament.

Coach Chapman was very proud of his teams efforts on the night and for the season as a whole with Chillicothe finishing 7-13 on the year. The Lady Hornets will say goodbye to six sensational senior leaders: Alice Hurtgen, Avery Baxter, Maci Johnson, Hadley Beemer, Madison Albaugh and Rylee Washburn.
