2022 IRS Refund Deadline Is April 15th

If you did not file a federal tax return in 2022, and you are due a refund for that year, you have until April 15th to file your 2022 tax return.  The IRS says about $1.2 billion remains unclaimed for 2022.

The IRS estimates the median refund amount is $686 for 2022, which means that half of the refunds are more than $686. This estimate does not include credits that may apply.

Under the law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their tax refunds. If they do not file within three years, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.

The IRS says taxpayers seeking a 2022 tax refund could find that their funds may be held if they have not filed tax returns for 2023 and 2024. In addition, any refund for 2022 will be applied to amounts still owed to the IRS or a state tax agency and may be used to offset unpaid child support or other past due federal debts, such as student loan debts.
