Maris plays all 9 positions, Mudcats victorious in season finale

CHILLICOTHE – Chillicothe’s offense exploded at Shaffer Park Saturday, tallying 12 hits, and beat Jefferson City 10-7 in the Mudcats’ season finale.

Elijah Maris played all nine positions for the Mudcats Saturday, starting as the catcher and played each position for one inning, finishing as the last pitcher.

A six-run second inning proved to be the difference. Both teams scored in each of their first three offensive innings, but no one scored more than two in an inning except the second.

The Mudcats combined to use seven different pitchers, including five position players. Chillicothe used pitchers on defense too, as did Jefferson City, and both teams approached the game with a jovial mindset. The outcome wasn’t significant for either side.

Jefferson City earns the three-seed in the South and will travel to either Joplin or Sedalia in Monday’s Wild Card round.

Chillicothe does not qualify for the MINK League playoffs and finishes the season 17-25.
