August – When Deer Begin Shedding Velvet

Outdoor enthusiasts, especially those that like to keep an eye on the area deer, will notice changes for the antlered bucks at this time of year.  The Missouri Department of Conservation tells us this is the time the deer start to shed the velvet from the antlers.  Conservation Agent Kevyn Wiskerchen says the velvet is a protective layer.

During the velvet shedding, the males may become more aggressive, rubbing their antlers against brush and other surfaces to help remove that velvet.
