Two Local Seniors To Compete In The American Legion Oratorical Contest

The American Legion’s Oratorical Contest is in its 86th year and this Saturday at Brookfield Trinity United Methodist Church at 1:00 pm, two local students will compete in the District Contest.  The Vern R Glick American Legion Post 25 in Chillicothe has two contestants competing.  They are Rachel Holt, a senior from Southwest High School; and Madelyn Wilford, and senior from Chillicothe High School.

District Chairman for the contest, Larry Warren says the contest actually began right here in Missouri.  Now, each year, Legion posts around the nation sponsor contestants who compete for scholarships at County, District, Zone, State, Regional and National levels.  This year the regional scholarship amounts have been increased from $1500 to $2000 for each round they advance through, and national scholarship amounts have been increased to $20,000; $18,000, and $15,000 for the top three winners.

In addition, Post 25 presents a $500 scholarship to our contestants who compete at District, and if one should advance to Zone, we will award another $500.
