Severe Weather Preparedness – Wind & Hail

This is Severe Weather Preparedness Week and The National Weather Service has information about Severe Weather each day this week.  Today’s Focus is on Wind and Hail.  Storm Coordination Meteorologist Andy Bailey says both are part of Severe Thunder Storms and are why we need to take Severe Thunderstorm Warnings seriously.   Bailey says strong wind can be devastating.

Bailey says that while small Hail may not be a problem, Large Hail can cause injury, and damage vehicles and even buildings.  He says the size of the hailstone is an indication of the strength of the storm.

The largest hailstone recorded in Missouri fell near Meadville on May 24, 2004.  It was 6 inches in diameter and 16.5 inches in circumference.

Friday, Bailey will talk about Flooding.
