Mudcats Drop Extra-Innings Season Opener to Carroll

CARROLL – Andrew Schroeder smacked five hits Tuesday, including a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning, lifting Carroll to a 16-15 extra-inning victory over Chillicothe Tuesday at Merchants Park.

Chillicothe led 14-10 with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth before chaos ensued.

A dropped third strike, followed by a single, a hit batter, and a walk, loaded the bases for Danny Schweitzer, who uncorked a three-run triple to tie the game at 14. Mudcat pitcher Nolan Barr was ejected shortly after for arguing balls and strikes.

Schroeder’s single would win the game an hour later.

The two teams combined to use 11 pitchers, walked 29 hitters, and left 29 runners on base, sending the contest over five hours of game time.

Tanner Sears hit a grand slam in the third inning for the Mudcats, which opened up a 5-0 lead at the time. Tyler Bickers reached six times as well, but it wasn’t enough to push Chillicothe to a season-opening victory.

The Mudcats will have to wait for their home opener.

Due to wet conditions, Wednesday’s home opener against Carroll has been postponed. Chillicothe will host the Clairinda A’s on Thursday night, first pitch is at 7:05.
