Mudcats build big lead early, hang on for 9-6 win

CHILLICOTHE – Elijah Maris hit a three-run homer in the first inning Tuesday, sparking what would become a seven run Chillicothe lead, and the Mudcats held on to avenge Sunday’s heartbreaking loss with a 9-6 victory over Carroll at Shaffer Park.

Chillicothe led 8-1 after six innings thanks to a handful of extra-base hits and eight walks issued by Carroll’s starter Sam Hanson. That lead would nearly evaporate though in the seventh inning.

Deejay Seelbach struggled in relief, retiring only two of his nine batters. He walked five, then gave up a bases-clearing triple to Jordan Matthewson to make it 8-6 at the time.

The Mudcats added an insurance run though in the eighth on an RBI double from Tanner Sears, one of his two doubles of the game. Sears then finished off the ninth on the bump for Chillicothe, earning his first save of the season.

Parker Ingram scored the only run off Mudcat starter Ryan Sell with a first inning solo home run. Sell tossed a beauty and earned the win, lasting six innings and allowing only three hits while striking out seven.

Chillicothe improves to 3-6 on the season with the win.

The Mudcats meet the St. Joseph Mustangs Wednesday at Burleigh Grimes Field in Trenton for a “home” game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. C.T.
