NTSB Continues To Investigate In Mendon

The NTSB remains on the site of the fatal train crash and derailment Monday at Mendon.  NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy stated they have collected the black box from the train and footage from the front-facing cameras.

The data recovered indicates the train was traveling 89 mph at ¼ mile from the crossing and at impact, the speed was 87 mph.  The speed limit for that crossing is 90 mph.

They know the train struck the truck at the back portion of the truck as it was crossing the tracks.

Homendy described the crossing

She also described the impact of the truck by the train.

The NTSB is meeting with state and federal transportation officials, county officials, and BNSF to discuss this and other crossings.
